Every year in elementary school, the teachers passed out small blue books to every student. On the cover was an imprint of the school logo and the inside pages were covered in blocks, boxes and lines. Each day was neatly marked with a name and a space for the date.

For some, getting to class may include a simple five-minute walk across campus or a two-minute drive down Pennington Road. But for hundreds of others, making it to class includes a slightly longer commute - with a stop at the gas pump along the way.

Each day, commuters make their way to the College from across the state, choosing to live at home as a cheaper alternative to both on and off-campus housing.

Described by many as a "stripped down male version of Alanis Morissette," New York singer/songwriter Jay Brannan has slowly been making a name for himself with legions of loyal fans as the next big thing on the indie music scene. With only word of mouth, some homemade YouTube videos, and a few concerts as his publicity, his self- released debut album premiered at number twenty-five on the overall iTunes charts, as well as number two on the folk charts.

When U.S. News and World Report released its annual "America's Best Colleges" issue, dozens of YU students likely opened the magazine hurriedly or browsed online to check how YU fared in this year's rankings. Last year, many students were disappointed that YU's ranking had fallen eight spots from number 44 to number 52, thus losing the coveted "Tier 1" designation that accompanies a spot in the top 50 national universities.

My Summer In Italy

I did not know what to expect when I signed up for a month long school trip to Italy. Professor Wagner, the professor who planned the trip in conjunction with Nancy Cave and Manhattan's Study Abroad office, has been taking students to Italy for years. I knew I would take an Italian class and a Dante Seminar, and that I would travel around Tuscany, but I had no idea how much I would see and experience.

Dear Devil's Advocate,

I am a freshman here at St. John's. However, I am also not from around here (about 5 hour drive away), so I do not know many people at all. Basically I am only acquainted with my roommates. It has only been a few days into the school year and I just feel terribly lonely.

Securing the safety

The Torch Online, Saint John's University New York, NY

It seems the talk of the University this semester so far is the New Founder's townhouses and how unique they are compared to other residence buildings on campus. One way they vary from other residence halls is the lack of Public Safety at the entranceway.

The Public Safety worker or guard at the front desk of residence hall dorms enforces visitation polices, and other Public Safety officers are visible all night, patrolling each hallway and lounge.
